Creating a Reading Corner

Having a reading corner at home is a great way to encourage children to read more. Even though we already have avid readers who will read just about anywhere in our house, I felt that having a proper reading corner would offer a better reading environment. Besides, G1’s teacher had created a reading corner in class and he couldn’t stop raving about it. He begged DH to make one for him at home so they got started on this reading corner project.

Project: Reading Corner

I initially collected some images on Pinterest to get ideas but most of them required more space than we had. Since we also have a corner window to accommodate, we couldn’t really use a lot of the ideas anyway.

I wanted a book corner with lots of natural light since we discovered that it is not reducing near-sighted work or even screen time but exposure to natural sunlight that is the key to reducing our risk to myopia. I also wanted something comfortable that would hopefully encourage the boys to sit properly while they read instead of twisting themselves up into little knots.

In the end, we went with something like this… According to G1, with a little imagination, the carpet is grass and the blue curtains are waterfalls.

We didn’t have space for more bookshelves, so I reorganised their shelves and moved some of their favourite books into the room…

The idea of the book corner is to encourage some wholesome reading habits so G1 put a screen ban on the corner – no iPads in the reading corner.
