Mama, Where’s the Car Engine?

Some time back, G2 asked me about the car engine. Since I know very little about car engines, all I could do was open the bonnet and show him what it looked like. Well, okay, I did point out the battery and I also showed him where the petrol goes in. Unfortunately, that was about all I could do because I didn’t know anything else.

Since we live in the age of information, you can find the answer to just about anything on the Internet so here’s what I found to help feed G2’s curiosity…

Video: How do car engines work?

This is a simple youtube video created for children…

App: Anatomy of a Car Engine

Anatomy of a Car Engine looks like a pretty cool app created for Windows.

Unfortunately, I cannot find it in the Windows app store so we got this video from youtube instead:

App: How Cars Work

How Cars Work is a simple educational app that teaches you how cars work. This one’s for me so that I can learn a thing or two before I pop the bonnet for G2 again. Written by engineering students, this app is targeted at people with any amount of knowledge, including those who are learning for the first time.

What’s in it:

  • all the most important systems in modern-day cars including the engine, the transmission system, the braking system and safety features
  • regularly used terms such as “cat-back” exhaust and “four-pot” callipers are explained
  • Aerodynamics and KERS sections explaining basic principles as applied to Formula 1 cars
  • Interactive high-resolution CAD renders of what you read to help you understand
  • Maintenance Guides section to help you in day-to-day tasks such as checking fluid levels and changing a tire
