Literacy Resources: Reading and Writing with Read Write Inc

Most methods of teaching children to write their alphabets are usually pretty boring and tedious. They usually involve something along the lines of repeatedly tracing rows and rows of letters until the child is able to remember how to form the letter from memory. It is no wonder some children don’t feel inclined to pick up a pencil to write…

About Read Write Inc

Read Write Inc is a program that offers a method of teaching writing with a difference. I first heard about it from my son’s school and it reminded me of a similar method used to teach alphabet forms in TweedleWink. The following presentation on Letter Formation demonstrates the method.

I like this method because it helps children remember the letter shapes using letter sounds and rhymes. If you would like to try this with your child, you can download the list of letter sounds and their rhymes. There is also a a series of Read Write Inc Phonics flashcards available:

Read Write Inc doesn’t only teach children to write, it is a complete literacy program that also teaches children to read using phonics. The lessons look pretty fun and engaging. Check out the following video demonstrates how a teacher introduces the letter “n”.
