Apps That Help Children Develop Problem Solving Skills

Problem solving skills are important for helping our children navigate the complexity of life. Helping them to develop these skills involves frequent exposure to problems they must solve – especially unfamiliar problems they have never encountered before. The extensive variety of puzzle apps available can help you provide your children with a continuous stream of novel problems to “fix”. Here are some of the puzzle apps that we have played and enjoyed:

Bad Piggies

Help the piggies create a vehicle that will help them navigate their way to safety.

Amazing Alex

Construct a chain reaction that will knock out the stars and achieve the goal of the level. I like this app especially because there is more than one way to complete the level.

How to Train Your Dragon

Help Hiccup and Toothless save the sheep by clearing a safe path and herding them to the viking ship.

Think Fun

These are like the Think Fun board games made available for your i-Thing.

Pit Droids

Give directions to the pit droids to help them make their way to their matching coloured home plate.

Where’s My Water?

Help direct the water so that Swampy can have enough water to take a bath. In later levels, you will need to direct the poison water to Cranky, and steam to Allie.

Also available:

However, these games are variations on a theme so the “novelty” factor will be significantly diminished.

Lost Light

Connect and match your way through this puzzle adventure from Disney! Journey to the heart of an enchanted forest and help restore the light hidden away by the wicked Beasties. Enter the world of Lost Light to experience a brand new kind of matching game with a unique numbers twist!

Cut the Rope

A mysterious package has arrived, and the little monster inside has only one request… feed him the CANDY! Collect gold stars, discover hidden prizes and unlock exciting new levels in this addictively fun, award-winning, physics-based game!

Cover Orange

A deadly genetically modified rain cloud of fruit dissolving vapour is heading for the orange capital of the world! Drag the various objects at your disposal to create barriers that will protect the oranges from the acid rain.

Fix the Clock

Jump, swing and climb on cogwheels in different clocks – aiming on a 3 star finish! Turn and scale the cogwheels to find your way.

Lost Cubes

Connect each cube to the matching cube to complete the puzzle in each world. But be careful not to cross the streams!

Ice Breaker

Use your icebreaking skills to solve puzzles and cut your way through ice, rope, cannons, explosives, slime and… err… chickens to get your clan back safely to the Viking longboat!

Programming app that teaching children how to code through game play.

Simple Physics

Design a physically sound structure that can withstand the forces applied to it.

Pudding Monsters

The Pudding Monsters are on a mission to save their friends from the cold-hearted fridge owner! Growing into an ULTIMATE MEGA MONSTER sounds like the most reliable plan. Can you give them a hand? Off the table, out of the house, and into the city – swipe to stick the Pudding Monsters together and save their friends! Take advantage of the different monster species and their powers (like the Slime Monster, who leaves a trail of green goo), boost your growth using the cloning machines, wear pretty little cars on your head and much more!

Keep in mind that it is important to keep the problems challenging so change the game once the task becomes too familiar. Having to figure out what must be done can present a challenge within itself.
