Child Safety Awareness and Education

One of the scariest things about being a parent are the increasing dangers in the world that our children are facing. As they grow older and start to spend more time away from us, there is an understandable concern from parents with regards to issues like sexual predators, child abuse, and internet safety. Even though there are arguments that the world today is no more dangerous than it was when we were children – just that we are more aware of the dangers now with social media sharing – I think it cannot be denied that our children are far more “accessible” to random strangers than we ever were because of their exposure to the Internet. Yet, to completely cut off their access in order to “protect” them is unrealistic.

Safety Education is the Way Forward

The best way to protect our children is to teach them about the dangers they unknowingly face. Awareness and knowledge are the tools that will help them to deal with these situations if they should encounter them.

The best time to discuss such topics with our children is before anything happens. That means we need to talk about subjects they have no understanding of and that can be difficult.

One way to simplify the process is to use videos that tell a story. The following videos talk about internet safety, child abuse and sexual predators.

I’m sure there are many more that are just as good and possibly better. Feel free to share the links in the comments below so that we can all benefit from these resources to help our children learn to stay safe.
