Learning Languages: Little PIM

There are many benefits for children learning a second language and the consensus seems to be pretty clear – the younger your child starts, the easier it will be – especially if it is before they reach about the age of 7 years. This is because the brains of young children are primed for learning – rather than having to learn tediously by rote, the manner in which they acquire another language appears effortless.

New research in the Journal Nature shows babies around 7 months old are able to learn two languages with very different grammatical structures.” – Learning a Second Language at a Young Age

Young children who learn to speak other languages are also able to pick up the native accent which most adults attempting to learn a second language do not. Language immersion is probably one of the best ways to learn another language but what happens if both parents can’t speak it?

Makoto Shichida saw anecdotal evidence that children who were exposed to recordings of a foreign language for about 20 minutes a day beginning from birth were able to acquire that language after 6 months to a year. Even if you’ve missed that early window of opportunity, it is not too late to start.
