Activities: Inspiring the Budding Scientist

The boys fancy themselves as little scientists… With a bit of food dye, some water, a couple of plastic beakers, an eye dropper and some test tubes and you can play “mad scientist” pretty easily and safely. If you want some all-in-one kits for some imaginative science play, these work pretty well:

Playing with colours is always fun. As a former science student, this was the part that attracted me to chemistry – all the pretty colours. Give your child a few beakers of coloured water and he’s guaranteed to have a lot of fun with it. When your child is ready for something a little more than mixing colours, you can try this easy home activity introduced to me by a homeschooling Mum friend:

Oil Lava Lamps

What you will need:

  • 1 inch tall glass bottles with stopper
  • oil
  • food colouring
  • water

Assemble your materials and this is what you’ll get:

If your child enjoyed making oil lava lamps, you can do more fun “colourful” experiments with these kits (please note that these are intended for slightly older kids, although younger children could probably do them with an adult):
