Brain Exercise – Keeping the Brain Fit and Healthy

In this technology age, there is a lot of controversy over our children’s exposure and use of smart devices. Some people fear it, others embrace it, while some advise moderation. If you’ve read my previous posts on it, you will know that I love technology. I’m a Trekker and fan of geeky things – something I can openly admit now because I’m no longer afraid of condemnation by peers because I’ve grown old enough to stop worrying about what other people think and because I know my real friends will not judge me for it. However, as much as I love technology, I know it is also a dangerous crutch that impairs the usage of our brains…

When I was growing up, I knew the phone numbers of everyone that mattered by heart – all my relatives and all my important friends. If I didn’t know the number, it was probably because it didn’t fall under the category of important. These days, I only remember 5 numbers by heart – my mobile, my husband’s mobile, my parents’ home number, my pils’ home number, and my grandparents’ number. Every other number is on my contacts list.

Just the other day, I downloaded a GPS app for my smart phone to help me find places in unfamiliar territories. It was great – turn left in 200m, keep right, at the round-a-bout… etc. If I made a wrong turning, the GPS would calculate a new route to get me back on track. Before I got the GPS, I had to look up the directions on the internet and commit the map to memory. Now that I have the GPS, it’s just one more way I am no longer using my brain…

It is unfortunate that technology has handicapped us so because, as they say, “use it or lose it” and I fear, as a society, we’re going to lose it unless we start viewing brain exercise as importantly the need to exercise our bodies for health.

The old-timers on this blog will also know that I’m obsessed with brain training. I’m probably about as fanatical about it as the fitness lovers are about their exercise. And given the ease with which we can replace the use of our brains with a machine (sometimes we don’t even bother to think about what the answer might be – we just let a machine work it out for us), I think I am justifiably concerned. Brain training and brain exercises are now, more than ever, an essential component to our continued growth and development, especially for our children.
