Project: Night Sky

As great as it has been to travel back to the Cretaceous era and totally immerse ourselves in the realm of the dinosaurs, I figured it was time for a break and a new subject. I saw Kidz Lab – Create a Night Sky Projection Kit at Metrojaya and thought it would be a fun way to “gaze at the stars” with the boys on a pretend camping trip.

Intended for ages 8 and above, the project was a bit fiddly for Gavin, but he did help me punch some of the holes for the stars. It took us about half an hour to complete (if you don’t count the distractions – e.g. Gareth pooping, Gavin wanting a snack, the telephone call, etc.). The model displays the constellations from both northern and southern hemispheres and requires 4 x AA batteries (which are not included). It cost us RM39.90 and can be found at Metrojaya and Toys ‘R’ Us. I’m sure they sell it elsewhere but these are the only two places I saw them in.

In a darkened room, you can see the reflection of the “stars” on the ceiling as well so it makes a good pretend night sky for a pretend camping trip (and it is better than having glow-in-the-dark stickers on the ceiling because it creates a more accurate depiction of the night sky with the stars in the relative positions of the constellations. Gavin couldn’t wait to have his camping trip but since it was a school night, we had to postpone the trip and go camping on the weekend instead.

  1. The same brand, there is also one interesting Earth Moon Model Made Up Kit approximately the same price that you bought for the Night Sky Kit, the other set is Astronomy Globe with Intelligent Quiz by Stellanova RM49.50 with 30% off expired 13/10/2011 with MPH card, also a worth kit, the globe is smaller but the star constellations and quiz cards are what worth the price.
