Right Brain Education: Developing the Genius Potential

In this week’s Heguru class, we received another video recording from Ruiko Henmi. The translation to English is not great but I think I managed to understand the gist of it.

Genius is a potential ability.

If the power of the conscious mind is one, then the power of the subconscious genius is 1 million (referring back to the previous video from Hirotada Henmi on the subconcious development).

The purpose of right brain education is to draw out the subconscious genius. For right brain education to work, it must have three features – high speed, strong stimulation, and continuity.

0-2 years old is the infant class (you can read more about the importance of infant education in the previous post on this topic). Some time back one of the senseis told me that the focus during this class is purely input. Although some precocious children may begin demonstrating output early, it is not the aim during this period. I think this is fundamentally where the problem with early childhood education arises – we feel a need to validate our efforts and end up trying to “test” our children.

For example, Gareth was sticking magnetic alphabets onto the refrigerator door one morning. As he picked up each letter, he would call out its name (if he could pronounce it). My mother got so excited, she started quizzing him, “Gareth, what letter is this?” And immediately, he clammed up.

We can encourage him to do activities that demonstrate output – such as sticking magnetic alphabets on the refrigerator and calling out their names, but we should try to avoid direct quizzing. Instead of asking, “What letter is this?” Try, “Can you find the letter ‘C’?” According to Doman, this style offers a problem to solve which is different from outright testing and is generally better received by children.

I’m digressing… 2-4 is the toddler class.

Preschool 1 is from 4 to 5 years old; Preschool 2 is from 5-6 years old. During this period, the aim is to develop both left and right brains together so that there is balanced development. This is pretty similar to TweedleWink philosophy. This is also the age when you can expect to see some output (as we have been observing in Gavin with his emerging photographic memory).

Primary class is from 6 years old and this is when they begin to do “hado reading” (wave reading). When the children develop hado reading, they will have the ability to access their genius potential at any time.
