Right Brain Education for Children with Disabilities

Some time back there was an enquiry about right brain education for children with learning disabilities. Since this is an area I have not researched, I could not provide an answer. Recently, I came across an answer from The Shichida Method by Makoto Shichida. This is what he says…

Even brain damaged children who are recommended by doctors to be institutionalised for life can become smart if they are given an education that focusses on the right brain. According to the Shichida Method, they have many such cases of children who were diagnosed with some brain development problem and were able to catch up after receiving right brain education. Here are two examples:

In the first case, the boy was developmentally delayed due to brain disabilities. His doctor believed he would be hospitalised for life. After being sent for right brain classes, “the child whose memory capability had been nil was able to develop his right brain in 3 months. In 4 months, it was as if his intelligence had burst into existence. He had no problem learning 80 Chinese characters from the first grade level in one month. He also started speaking and he was able to sing many songs.

In the second case, the boy was diagnosed as autistic. When he started attending right brain classes, he could not utter a single word. After right brain education, he was able to speak, move around normally and participate in activities like throwing, tug-of-war, dancing and gymnastics. When he went back to his doctor for a review, his doctor was amazed and said that he had caught up to “normal” development which was very rare.

None of this should come as a surprise since Glenn Doman also recorded such miraculous reversals in the development of brain-damaged children with his work. Glenn Doman’s work first began his with brain damaged children. It was only after observing how quickly these children were able to catch up with their peers that he wondered how a similar program might affect “normal” children.

The theory behind right brain development and the recovery of children with developmental disabilities is that the damage is in the left brain, therefore regular education programs that focus on the left brain cannot help. However, right brain education that focusses on imagery can help to develop their latent right brain abilities. It was also found that disabled children performed better at imagery compared to “normal” children.

How to use right brain education to develop children with disabilities

Like all right brain education, it begins with the heart. It is important for parents to view their child positively. The biggest stumbling block for these children is the negative perception they have been receiving. People view them as inferior because of their disabilities. This prevents them from tapping into their right brain potential. To remove this barrier, parents of these children need to show their love and their belief in them. The 8 second hug and 5 minute suggestion can be used to convey this. With the 5 minute suggestion, tell your child he is a genius, he can completely cure his problem.

Right brain activities for children with disabilities

Begin with flash cards:

  • flash as quickly as you can
  • flash as many cards as you can (less than one second per card)
  • 100-200 cards per session (more if possible)

The purpose of flashing cards:

  • it activates the right brain
  • it develops instant memory (right brain memory)
  • it helps to connect the right and left brain
  • it helps to give wordless children words

After flashing cards, move on to sense play and memory play.
