There are two methods that can used to nurture and develop a child – by adding points and by deducting them. An example of the points deducting method in the working environment would be a boss threatening an employee, “If you fail again, you will be fired!” It takes an individual with a lot of mettle to be able to rise in the face of such negative words. Many individuals will feel intimidated and useless, resulting in an increased likelihood of failing. Likewise, the points deducting method shatters a child’s courage and prevents them from achieving their best.
By motivating your child with the points adding method, you can help your child develop the skill of self-motivation. Children who are self-motivated can progress and gain achievements without needing to be pushed. Raising a child using the points adding method cultivates a positive self-image which is beneficial because it has been shown that individuals with great abilities all have a strong positive self-images.
Examples of positive motivation and encouragement:
“You definitely can do it because you are …”
“If you can achieve this, then we will …”
Individuals with positive image thinking such as “When I accomplish this, I shall …” will demonstrate greater abilities compared to individuals with negative image thinking such as “If I can’t achieve this, it will be a disaster”.
It is important that we do away with the old method of punishment when an individual cannot achieve. Children who are raised using the points adding method will be able to rise to greater heights.
