Shichida Video Footage

I was searching through Youtube when I stumbled across a video about the Shichida Method that was recorded in English. Previously most videos I had seen were in Japanese. This video shows similar footage to the earlier videos I have seen but the voiceover in this video is in English.

Shichida and Doman have always said that little children have amazing ability to manipulate numbers in their heads and can solve complex Mathematical equations in a flash. For instance, in the video footage at frame 2:02, a mother asks her daughter the following equation:

(1025÷5-201+58)÷2+29

She then shows her two cards with random quantities of red dots on them but only one card has the correct answer. The girl immediately slaps the card with the correct answer.  Children who have been through right brain training can answer equations like these and get the answer right every time. Because the children are often very young, it is advised not to ask them to verbalise an answer but to give them two answers and ask them to point to the correct answer.

It has been argued that children read unspoken cues they detect from their parents which allows them to guess which card holds the correct answer. I found it interesting to note that the mother in the video keeps her head down and avoids eye contact with her daughter which eliminates the validity of this argument for this particular example.

There is also an example of wave reading (also known as Quantum Speed Reading – QSR) in action in the video. They say that the children are taking “photographs” of the words in the book, however, when you view the footage (4:32) they are flicking through the book so quickly and sometimes barely even opening the book up fully. Yumiko Tobitani, a former Shichida teacher wrote about the QSR technique in her book Quantum Speed Reading where the students in her class were able to absorb information from a book by flicking through the book in the same manner shown in the video above. Even books that were in foreign languages could be understood by the children because pictures and words in their native tongue would float out of the book.

There is a lot of controversy over QSR and whether it really does exist. The examples from Tobitani’s booka and this video footage is all I have seen documenting it. There are also articles about blind-fold reading which seems to follow the same theory. Based on what I was told by one of the senseis in Heguru, this is something that the children will learn when they are older. Until then, this is all I can tell you about it.
