2nd Pregnancy Week 25

Is it just me or is the second pregnancy harder on the body compared to the first?

Firstly, I’ve noticed that I seem to be much larger at this stage of the pregnancy than I was when I was pregnant with Gavin.  It is said that because the body has stretched before, everything expands more readily the second time around.  Okay, I accept that, but at the rate of my current expansion, I’ll be larger than a beached whale by the time I’m due.

With the concomitant increase in size has been the associated symptoms.  I don’t only suffer from lumbar back pain but the other night, I experienced posterior pelvic pain.  I was nursing Gavin in bed and my behind was aching.  I’m pretty sure I didn’t develop back pain during the last pregnancy until I was into the third trimester.

Deciding it was high time I did some light exercises to relieve the back pain, I tried the Yoga Zone “Pregnancy and Postures” yoga DVD yesterday.  Suffice to say I fell asleep during the cool down.  When I woke up, I couldn’t remember why I was lying on the floor.  Then I remembered I was supposed to pick my son up from school.  Luckily I woke up with just enough time to change and dash out the door and wasn’t late to pick him up.

Then there are the stretchmarks from hell.  Recently, my belly was feeling itchy so I applied my usual cream to help relieve the itch.  It was the first time I had examined my belly closely under daylight – most other times have been under artificial light – and I discovered that the entire area around my belly button is riddled with stretchmarks!  I never noticed them before because they are kind of silvery and can only be seen in natural lighting.

My brain is completely gone.  A few days ago, I was coming down the stairs holding a clean t-shirt for Gavin.  He was bathing in my MIL’s room so I was going to pass her some clean clothes before heading back up for my own bath.  My FIL asked me to close the windows on the landing.  Since I was going to head back upstairs after, I thought I would do it then.  I went to my MIL’s room, deposited the t-shirt and went straight upstairs and past the windows without shutting them.  It must have been a matter of a minute or two only and I had already forgotten what my FIL said!

Oh yes, I forgot to mention… the groin ache.  During the first pregnancy, I only developed groin pain after “working out” too much.  I was doing yoga and early morning walks with the hubby and the doc suggested I go easy.  This time I’ve developed groin pain even though I haven’t been exercising!

Of course there are the usual factors to take into account, such as being a few years older and not as fit since I don’t work out any more – or rather my workout consists of looking after a toddler.  But I do wonder if these two factors alone can account for the fact that my body feels a lot worse during this pregnancy.  And if I already feel this bad in my second pregnancy, surely it would only be worse if I had a third one after this.  All the more reason to stop at two…
